The Shropshire Middle Severn catchment is largely rural with a few towns such as Newport, Market Drayton, part of Telford and the northern part of Shrewsbury, although there is significant pressure for urban development. The catchment includes the River Severn and its tributaries including the Tern and Perry. In addition the area is well fed with canals including the Shropshire Union.
The area is ecologically rich and includes a large number of designated sites, most of which come under the Midlands Meres and Mosses Ramsar Site. There are also several water related Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) in this area.
